Award Recognizes Segal’s Outstanding Contributions to Arizona Public Education

Phoenix, AZ – Susan Plimpton Segal recently received the John R. McDonald Award from the Arizona School Boards Association (“ASBA”) at its 37th Annual ASBA Law Conference on September 5. This award was created to recognize those school attorneys who advance public education in Arizona.

Segal is a partner at one of Arizona’s oldest law firms, Gust Rosenfeld. Her practice is devoted to education, municipal and public law. “We are very proud of Susan. Her receipt of this prestigious award is well deserved. For over 25 years, She has been a passionate, tireless, and effective advocate for our public school clients, as our growing education law practice attests,” said Rob Haws, the chair of the education law department at Gust Rosenfeld.

Prior to joining Gust Rosenfeld, Segal was Division Chief in the Public Advocacy Section of the Arizona Attorney General’s office where she also served as Section Chief in the Education and Health Section.

“Only those individuals who have an exemplary track record of service to their clients over a substantial period of time are considered. Susan Segal exceeds these requirements. Her service to her clients has been remarkable. Whether in private practice, as district in-house counsel or as Education Section Chief at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Susan has given outstanding counsel to her clients and has served the greater cause of public education in doing so,” said Chris Thomas, Legal & Policy Services, director of the Arizona School Board Association.

In presenting the award, the prior recipient, John C. Richardson of DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy noted, “While Susan has always been an outstanding school lawyer, her time at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office is especially worth our appreciation. Susan revolutionized the office to vastly improve its functioning to the benefit of public education and school districts. She kept school attorneys informed on issues and gave us the opportunity to comment and submit opinions. The result led to better Attorney General opinions being issued. Her fellow school lawyers will be forever grateful for the service she provided to our clients and public education in Arizona.”

Segal is AV™ Preeminent rated by Martindale-Hubbell®. She graduated from the University of Kansas, B.A. with Distinction in 1970, and from the Arizona State University College of Law with a J.D. in 1979.
