New Law Ensures Students May Wear Tribal Regalia During Graduation
April 22, 2021 – This week Governor Ducey signed HB2705 into law ensuring that Arizona public high school students, who are Indian tribe members, may wear traditional tribal regalia and culturally significant objects at the school’s graduation ceremony. Earlier this year, a federal court judge (in a case handled by our office) upheld a district’s graduation dress code that prohibited any adornment of the cap and gown. View the decision here.
What 2021 graduation ceremonies will look like was already quite uncertain. This new law adds to that as its implications are unlikely to be limited to tribal members or their regalia. Districts should review their graduation dress codes in light of this new development.
