(Phoenix, AZ) – Gary Verburg of Gust Rosenfeld has been selected to receive the 2014 Public Lawyer Career Achievement Award from the State Bar of Arizona. The award will be presented at the Bar Convention Wednesday, June 11, 2014 and recognizes a retired or retiring public attorney who has had a distinguished career in public practice and has made significant contributions to the public good.

“Gary has spent his entire practice of more than 35 years representing government entities including several Indian Tribes and a number of municipalities in Arizona,” said Scott Ruby, chair of the Public Law section of Gust Rosenfeld. “He’s made valuable contributions to every aspect of government law, from tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction to prosecution, tort defense, regulatory enforcement, and taxation.” He also provided instrumental legal services for many of Phoenix’s major accomplishments such as the downtown ASU campus, Valley Metro Rail, T-gen, Sheraton Hotel and CityScape.

Verburg was City Attorney for the City of Phoenix from 2005 to 2014. In that capacity, he managed a public law firm of 200-250 employees and oversaw a budget of $20,000,000 to $25,000,000. Previously, he was Interim City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney for the City of Glendale, and a partner in the firm of Margrave, Celmins & Verburg, and the firm of Vlassis & Verburg. Verburg is a graduate of the University of Utah, (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and Antioch School of Law (now University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law).
